What does the breakdown of school music teachers look like based on gender?
You can use the app below to start exploring the basic patterns…
*Please note – the interactive application below is best viewed on larger screens and may be difficult to interact with on mobile devices.*
MTD has built this app using a universe of teachers of band, choir, orchestra, and general classroom music programs in K-12 schools across the U.S. Only confirmed male or female directors are included in this app. Directors with unisex names have been excluded for clarity.
Take some time to interact with the app and see what you discover. To get you started, here are a couple of observations we’ve made during our time building and using the app.
First, the vast majority of band directors at large, public high schools in high income areas are male. In fact, 84.62%.
…In contrast, at small, private elementary schools in low income areas, 83.66% of general classroom music teachers in our universe are female!
